Invention of the first Glasses
The glasses can first be traced down between the 1268-1300's in Florence. The creator is unknown, but it is said that Salvino D'armate is most likely the one who came up with the idea to sit two glass lens on a wooden frame to create the first pair of glasses. At first, glasses were only worn by the rich and was mainly used as a decoration, until the printing press was created causing it to have a high demand for them for both the upper and lower class. It was later then when a painting was found from 1352 created by Tommaso De Modena, displaying a man wearing a pair of glasses. More materials were used for glasses such as wood, lead, copper, bone, etc. but the two lenses stayed the same.
As glasses continued to evolve many inventions were made thanks to the thought of glasses. This could be the telescope which helped people create theories and discoveries of our universe or the microscope which allowed the discovery of biology. Glasses also changed overtime to give different needs for each person who wears them. In 1786, bifocals were invented by Benjamin Franklin so he wouldn't have to continue switching between two different types of glasses for daily activities and reading. He took the two different glasses, cut them in half, and one half of each back in the glasses. With these, he was able to do both activities without switching his glasses every time. Another creation that was made after this is the trifocals which allow three prescriptions to be on a pair of glasses. They made this by cutting three types of lens and put them together so it can create glasses that help someone's vision for near, far, or intermediate. With these creations, the modern-day glasses were created to help us have better vision and more technology to explore.
